Meeting Spirit to Spirit with Jennifer Duchene: Blending Lifestyle, Laughter and Butterflies in ‘Le Chic Cocoon’

September 26, 2011 By: fiona Category: Meeting Spirit to Spirit

It’s a real pleasure to be able to introduce you to wonderfully inspiring people on this site and share things with you that I have loved and benefited from.

Today I’m putting the well-deserved spotlight on Jennifer Duchene, a highly creative woman who calls herself the Makeover Mixtress. I recall conversations with her ranging from spirituality, lifestyle and indulging in the senses, as well as all the practicalities of life.  In fact, I don’t think there’s anything you couldn’t have a wonderful conversation with her about.

And I have a real treat to share with you – it’s a conversation we had together where Jen gives you a glimpse into her life, telling you about what inspires her, what’s important to her in life and above all, how she came to write her amazing first book, ‘Le Chic Cocoon – 7 Steps to Creating Your Selfish Space’. It was inspired by Virginia Woolf and how she saw that women needed a room of their own to fully be themselves in. Jen masterfully combines her expert knowledge of design and home living with the spiritual needs of a woman.

I’m including here a short extract from her book which will hopefully give you food for thought and encourage you to read more. And there are details of her upcoming booklaunch as well as information which help you find out more about her work and contact her.

But first I’d love to invite you to listen in to our conversation:

Click here:  Audio Interview with Jennifer Duchene

Here is an extract from her book which describes her experience of shifting around elements in a room devoid of energy. I think it’s a fabulous analogy of how to deal with life:

Excerpt from Le Chic Cocoon

‘We look at our problems and think there’s no way we can do this differently. It’s just like looking at a room and thinking there’s no way to move these pieces and make the room look different because it’s never going to work.

Jennifer with her latest book 'Le Chic Cocoon'

I have discovered that we just need to jump in, just decide to do it, and miraculously it works. When I do a room rearrangement, I don’t plan it.

I have no idea what I’m going to do when I get there because I don’t know what needs to be done until I am physically moving the room around. I don’t let myself pre- plan it. It sets up all these pre-conceived ideas and blocks out any chance to be surprised by creating something amazing. When you go into your own life, when you go into a room, just think, well, let’s see what I can do.

Many times, I think to myself, ―I don’t know what I’m going to do here. It’s just such a hard room. How am I going do it? There’s nothing to work with.‖ Then I get stuck in, start moving stuff around, and suddenly everything falls together by itself. Sometimes this is how we need to look at life and our cocoons or potential, without knowing the answers. We just need to make the first move. It’s almost like the river runs the other way, and then you say, “I never would have thought of that”.’

I love being able to interview all these amazing people who have a beautiful spiritual message to share and my latest guest is certainly no exception. Please meet Maridel Bowes, an evolutionary astrologer who has a great love for Hawaii and works with people like you and me, showing us the deeper purpose of why we are here.

Maridel has also published two books and will be talking to you about them in this recording. And many of you will already know her blog, where she shares wonderfully thought-inspiring posts in her very unique, quirky and humourous manner, bringing you spiritual food for thought and an opportunity to deeply reflect.

Note: there’s one small point I wanted to mention here. Maridel made reference to Shakti Gawain saying ‘Trust the process’, when it was actually ‘Follow the energy’.

Meeting Spirit to Spirit on the Cosmic Web: Tareth – Spiritual Teacher and Healer

May 03, 2011 By: fiona Category: Meeting Spirit to Spirit

A very warm welcome to the first in my series of audio interviews with people who have inspired me. You’re about to listen to me meeting spirit to spirit with Tareth, spiritual healer and teacher who lives in the Isle of Avalon.

Tareth is perhaps known to some of you through his public manifestations of workshops on sound healing or his Blessings from the Source where often perfumed oil is manifested. But his work encompasses much more than this.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Tareth during the time I lived in Glastonbury, when I worked with and for him organising  spiritual events and keeping the day to day tasks in order.

I have fond memories of workshops on sound healing, angels and tuning into ancient civilisations, as well as spiritual retreats in the summer months that were both fun and transformational. But I’d love you to listen to Tareth talking about these things in his own words.

Please click on this link to hear me meeting Tareth spirit to spirit:

I hope you enjoy this conversation and would love you to leave your comments in the box below. If you’d like to find out more about Tareth’s work, ask him any questions or book a place at one of his workshops, please contact him at this email address and have a look at his website:

You can also contact Tareth’s assistant Helen on 01458-833929. Please leave a message if no-one is there and you will be called back as soon as possible.

Creating a Spiritual Online Community

April 27, 2011 By: fiona Category: Meeting Spirit to Spirit

It’s been a long while since I posted anything on the site and that is due to many things. The most important of that being that I was redefining everything I have online, giving it all a new look and feel. I was basically rebranding myelf, if that makes sense.

This was all part of an amazing social media course (SNCC) that I did and completed, which enabled me to get much more organised with all my sites, giving it all a much more organic character than it had before. It also taught me to regard myself as the key element in defining my online presence and I gained much more visibility through letting my own authentic voice be heard instead of hiding behind products or trying to sell to people. This is something I will continue to do as I proceed with my projects.

I created a central hub from which to operate and gave my own name to that site. You can find it at From there you can find your way to everything else which I do. And I find that focus fabulous. I have also been working a lot with video and that is why I have now embedded an introductory video on the homepage of this site.

I feel much more empowered as a result of taking this course and I have eliminated a lot of the scattered elements that were just distracting from my central themes.

Now that I have the core in place, I am beginning to put other structures in place. And I am now committed to continuing with this project, too. After the initial attempts at looking at properties with the purpose of setting up a physical centre. I see much more clearly that the way forward is truly to create a huge online network and just allow things to develop from there.

One part of this will involve me interviewing lots of people who inspire me. Today I published the first interview in this ongoing series, called ‘Meeting Spirit to Spirit’, which I found very appropriate.

You can see the interview of Mark Keane, kundalini yoga teacher in Bristol, by following this link.

My next step is to begin conducting interviews with people and publishing these as audio recordings (podcasts), which you can listen to again and again. I see that this will go a long way towards creating a beautiful network and drawing people to this centre to connect and find out more.

The first interview has already been made and is just awaiting my editing skills to enhance it slightly.

So I am very excited about the new lease of life this project has taken on. Everything always happens in perfect timing and I think I needed to travel around the block a few times before feeling I had really got clear on what I wanted to share.

I hope you will accompany me further on this journey and share your comments, feedback and ideas with me as I go.

Thanks for being there.

Taking Action Steps Despite the Apparent Competition

November 14, 2010 By: fiona Category: Taking action

As I continue on this path of exploration I realise that I am becoming easily distracted by what lots of other people around me are doing. Sometimes I imagine these things are relevant and other times they are completely random.

I’m aware that my subconscious beliefs are dictating what I do and how I do it. I imagine that I’m not doing things fast enough or well enough. And then I start to get nervous and find myself coming off course.

Since I have started this blog and made a statement as to what I would like to work towards, it’s amazing how many examples of similar things have begun to manifest in my world. If I were to allow these things to block my view and undermine my confidence, I would never get going.

It is so true that Richard Branson would never have got to where he is if he had been put off by some of the larger companies that were already doing what he was aiming to do.

I’ve found it a bit unnerving when people closer to home have strangely started doing things I have talking about doing, suddenly, totally out of the blue. But when I take a moment to find stillness, I see that the universe is simply challenging me, urging me forward, helping me to get clarity and take steps where I might have stood still in my moments of indecision. It’s so easy to act like a rabbit sitting there frozen in the light cast by the oncoming cars.

The particular people I am referring to are, in my eyes, doing a fabulous job. I could really feel quite small and insignificant alongside them. ……or not.

As I contemplated my feelings of unworthiness this morning, I realised that this could always go two ways. Either I withdraw, deciding that I won’t take the challenge. Or I become galvanized into action, deciding to take others’ actions as an example and overcoming my fears to move forward.

I’m opting for moving forward and am now making a mental note to set something into action that I was procrastinating about.

So thank you to those of you who have unknowingly stepped forward and got me going again. You’ve done me a service and I’m grateful for that.

Introducing Cheryl Rickman’s Book…and finding some deeper-lying spiritual principles

October 28, 2010 By: fiona Category: Inspirations

I think I mentioned earlier that I decided to work through ‘The Small Business Start-Up Book’ by Cheryl Rickman so that I can put together a whole business plan for my dream centre.

Cheryl’s book has been endorsed by Dame Annita Roddick and she has worked with many big names including Peter Jones of ‘The Dragon’s Den’.

I had actually bought a copy a few years back when I attended a course in Dublin but was unable to put my hand on it recently. It probably needed to go off and visit someone else. :-) Anyway I decided to just go ahead and get another one.

The thing I like about her book is that it is written by a woman. I know that’s a bit obvious but it just has a different feel to it from many of those other books written by her male counterparts. She takes quite a bit of time at the beginning to guide you through the process of finding big ideas and seeing where you get your inspiration. So there’s quite a lot of list-writing, just brain-storming, spontaneously writing down lots of ideas of where you would like to be going and what your concept of success looks like.

But then she asked this question: what’s motivating you to start up in the first place?

I began to write down all sorts of things that just came bursting out of me. And it became very obvious that I was being guided by my spiritual needs in all of this. I wrote that I wanted to connect on heart level with real people. I also wrote that I wanted to create a loving space, a home from home for people who feel spiritually lost and isolated.

I wrote down so many things, too many to mention here. But the one that really jumped out at me on reading it all again was this: I  want to feel alive and inspired every day.

It is true that if we want something, the easiest way to achieve this is to give it to someone else. It may sound paradoxical, yet when we stop to think about it, we can only give to others what we already have. And so in order for me to feel truly inspired every day, all I need to do is commit to inspiring others. And in order to inspire others, all I need to do is simply be me. Be all that I can be. Be all that I already am.

Which means that there is nothing to aspire to. Just breathing in and breathing out in equal measure. And this is certainly key in my feeling alive.

So strangely, what I want, I already have. And so it’s up to me to keep bringing my awareness back to this, to remind myself.

There’s a wonderful suggestion in Cheryl’s book for keeping you in a space of motivation. She calls it an ‘inspiration book’. You can fill it with pictures, quotes and visions which you can continue to look at and help you get back on track when you are having a difficult time. Put your milestones in it and keep reminding yourself of what your original inspiration was.

Well, I’ve started up my inspiration book and am looking forward to filling it with uplifting things which will be a joy and inspiration for me to refer to on my journey, which by the way I’m really enjoying.

The Vivid Dream

October 21, 2010 By: fiona Category: Inspirations

I know that I dream a lot in the night and very often I only have a fleeting sensation of what was going on, only remembering the energy of it.

But the other night I had one of those dreams that was very memorable, one that really stood out and grabbed my attention. And it was after I had done a lot of work thinking about where my new project was taking me and knowing that ultimately it would come to a total surrender on my part. An allowing and letting go.

This was what happened.

We were coming home and as we approached the house, I noticed that the front door was wide open. My heart skipped as I knew that something was wrong. As we got closer I could see into the hallway and noticed that it looked empty. We entered the house only to realise that our suspicions were confirmed. The whole house was completely empty. Completely. Every last thing had been removed. By them. I ran from room to room panicking, thinking that I would discover that everything was stashed in some hidden corner. It was not the case. There was nothing. I remembered realising that even if we could tell them that it was a mistake, there was no way we could reverse this. So we stood there with nothing and had to just get on with it. In a few seconds an eternity went by. Then things started happening and we had to react, get on with life with nothing. It felt extremely odd but the fear had gone….

The thing about this dream was that my senses were heightened, hugely magnified. It felt like the film was being played in slow motion.  I was sort of dreaming lucidly after that, thinking, ‘Oh my god, what a dream. That was really significant.’

For some strange reason I couldn’t bring myself to write this down in my journal until at least 24 hours had passed. Yes, the dream was very significant to me. It was stamped in indelible ink, flashing like a neon light in the dark. It was telling me all sorts of things and speaking very clearly to me about the way forward. And such transformation. Being stripped bare. Walking through fears and giving up control. So much food for thought – I could fill my journal a dozen times or more with insights.

And how beautifully illustrated by my subconscious. My coming home. I love the way my dream world speaks to me in such a clear language. I’m very thankful for the clarity and power contained within these messages.

Perhaps there is something here of significance for you too. Thank you for reading this.

The Cosmic Web and a New Way of Being

October 14, 2010 By: fiona Category: Inspirations

A very warm welcome to The Cosmic Web, a space I have opened up to share the process of coming home to a new way of being.

And the point comes when you realise that there is a job to be done. That there is a new way of being.

And all that remains to do is to respond to those deep inner promptings and allow that divine spark within full expression. Fully surrendering now and creating space for the joyful expression of who I AM.

In gratitude.
